Anatomy of the foot

The anatomy of the foot is rather complex because of the large number of bones, ligaments and muscles that compose it. It is in a set of joints that carry the weight of the body and are therefore subjected to important constraints.

The foot of an adult is composed of 26 bones forming joints attached by a hundred ligaments.

Foot bones

Each toe is composed of 2 to 3 phalanges, the first of which is attached to a longer bone called the metatarsal, forming the metatarsophalangeal joint.

Overweight, poorly fitting footwear, trauma or genetic factors may be the cause or causes of foot deformities and dysfunctions that make walking difficult and may eventually lead to complications for the entire lower limb
