Ankle Arthritis

Three bones make up the ankle joint, primarily enabling up and down movement. The ends of the bones are covered with articular cartilage—a slippery substance that helps the bones glide smoothly over each other during movement. Joints are surrounded by a thin lining called the synovium. The synovium produces a fluid that lubricates the cartilage and reduces friction

Osteoarthritis is a degradation of the cartilage of your joint that can evolve in different ways. Your ankle can become painful and stiff, its ability to move will also depend on the condition of the muscles and tendons.

Before a consultation, an X-ray and a CT scan or MRI should be performed to assess the condition of the muscles and tendons.

Inquire in advance is mandatory in order to perform the most suitable examination.

Treatment options

Medical treatment

In first instance, the pain and inflammation of the joint can be controlled by the prescription of analgesics and anti-inflammatory drugs. Proper rehabilitation will also help to maintain the flexibility of the joint and relieve the pain phenomena.

Your doctor or rheumatologist may propose an injection of anti-inflammatories or a viscosupplementation.

These medical treatments aim to relieve you momentarily but do not prevent the evolution of the disease.

Surgical treatment

  • Arthrodesis involves blocking the joint by fusing the bones. This intervention does not prevent walking or sporting activities.
  • Ankle prosthesis, consists in replacing the damaged parts of the joint by prosthetic implants.
