Lateral Epicondylitis (Tennis elbow)

The lateral epicondylithis is an inflammation of the tendons that join the forearm muscles on the outside of the elbow and is due to overuse.
The pain is located on the side of the elbow and can radiate along the forearm to the wrist.

Lateral Epicondylitis is also known as "tennis elbow" and is due to intense muscular use, either in the professional practice by heavy or repetitive tasks, or in the practice of sport, especially in racket sports.

In the absence of appropriate treatment, the pathology becomes chronic and can lead to loss of muscle strength.

To make a diagnosis, your surgeon will perform a clinical examination to test for damaged tendons. Additional tests, such as ultrasound, may be helpful in assessing the extent of the lesions and suggesting the most appropriate treatment for your situation.

Treatment options

Medical Treatment
In first instance, the use of analgesics and anti-inflammatory medications, combined with adapted rehabilitation, can relieve the painful phenomena. In addition, a nocturnal resting splint can be proposed.

Injection of Platelet Concentrate

In some cases, depending on the characteristics of the tendinopathy, the injection of platelet concentrate will give a favorable result within 8 weeks after injection. This innovative treatment, the results of which are being validated scientifically, is schematically carried out as follows :

  • Blood collection
  • Centrifugation of the blood taken to extract the platelets
  • Injection of platelets into the tendon fissure (under local anesthesia and guided by ultrasound)

If medical treatments fail, surgery may be proposed.

Surgical Treatment
The procedure consists in debridement of the epicondyle tendons (cleaning of the pathological tissues and repair of the tendons).

At the Bordeaux-Merignac Sport Clinic, this arthroscopic procedure is performed as outpatient basis
