Osteotomy or Reorientation

The knee is very stressed during walking or running ; it supports important stresses and must be particularly stable to avoid falls. The cartilage covers the bones and allows them to slip against each other, when worn or degraded one speaks of osteoarthritis of the knee or knee osteoarthritis.

Osteotomy is generally indicated in the youngest subjects (before the age of 60 years) with a limited osteoarthritis. Osteotomy is an intervention aimed at "straightening" or re-locating the lower limb above or below the knee in order to better distribute the load of the body weight on the joint.

The procedure consists in making a cutaneous incision to reach the upper part of the tibia. The surgeon will calculate the angle of cut of the tibia that will correct the axis of the lower limb. The bones will then be fixed using a system of screwed plates.
