Retrocalcaneal "Haglund" syndrome

Conflict is the result of abnormal contact within the joint, this may be due to bone deformity that causes friction, bone damage, or tissue that may "get stuck" in the joint

The retrocalcaneal or so-called Haglund syndrome is due to a malformation of the heel bone, the calcaneus whose protruding tip conflicts with the Achilles tendon creating an inflammation called bursitis.

The origins are a morphological abnormality (foot too flat) and / or the wearing of unsuitable shoes.

Your surgeon will need an X-ray with specific views. Ultrasonography or MRI may be useful for the examination of the soft tissues.

Inquire in advance is mandatory in order to perform the most suitable examination.

Treatment options

Medical Treatment
In first instance, the adaptation of the footwear, the wearing of orthopedic soles and the follow-up of an adapted rehabilitation program can provide lasting relief.

In case of failure, surgery may be proposed.

Surgical Treatment
The procedure consists in eliminating the source of the conflict by performing a resection of the upper edge of the calcaneus.

At the Bordeaux-Merignac Sport Clinic, this procedure is performed under arthroscopy and as an outpatient basis
