This pathology will cause pain and difficulty in moving your thumb and may evolve towards a deformation of the hand or instability.
There are two techniques for surgical treatment
Trapeziectomy
This involves removing the bone from the trapezium and then stabilizing the joint by connecting the first and second metacarpals, either by fixing pins or by means of end-knobs.
The thumb prosthesis
This involves removing the ends of the bones whose cartilage has been damaged by osteoarthritis and replacing them with a prosthetic implant.
The surgeon performs an incision at the junction between the trapezius and the first metacarpal. It removes the worn ends of the trapezium and the first metacarpal, which it then prepares to receive the prosthetic implant by digging them (bore).
Mobility and stability are checked before dissolving suture.
