Wrist Prosthesis

Different surgical procedures can treat osteoarthritis of the wrist ; the prosthesis is a relatively rare indication and concerns the most severe forms of osteoarthritis.

When wrist arthritis is severe and the joint is stiffened, the wrist prosthesis will relieve pain while restoring joint mobility.

This relatively rare procedure involves replacing the highly damaged parts of the joint with a prosthetic implant.

Surgical treatment

The first procedure involves cutting the skin on the top of the wrist and cutting the joint capsule into the surgical site.

Then, the 3 bones of the first row of the carpus (the scaphoid, the semi-lunar and the capital) are removed and a progressive bore is made at the lower end of the radius (arm bone) Place the prosthetic implant.

The mobility and stability of the joint are verified before closing the incision.
