Hip Arthristis

The hip is a joint that supports the weight of the body ; it undergoes important constraints. The bone extremities are covered with cartilage a smooth slippery substance that protects and cushions the bones and enables them to move easily. Osteoarthritis degrades the cartilage and causes pain and stiffness that prevent proper functioning of the joint and walking.

The top of the thighbone : the femoral head, comes to fit into the iliac bone (the pelvis) at the level of a cavity called acetabulum

Hip osteoarthritis, is a disease that leads to the irreversible degradation of the cartilage and the formation of bone beaks (osteophytes).

This degradation results in pain, stiffening of the joint and limitation of the perimeter of walking. Osteoarthritis usually occurs in the sixties, but it can also occur in younger subjects as a result of trauma or in the case of joint disease.

The diagnosis of hip osteoarthritis is made with an X-ray, which allows evaluating the bone lesions ; sometimes an MRI is necessary to complete the diagnosis.

Inquire in advance in order to perform the most suitable examination.

Treatment options

Medical treatment
In first instance, analgesics and anti-inflammatories medications will relieve the painful phenomena. Loosening weight can reduce stress on the hip joint, resulting in less pain and increased function.
In parallel, specific physical therapy exercises will increase range of motion and strengthen the muscles of the hip and leg.

If relief through medical treatment and rehabilitation is not enough, your doctor may recommend surgery.

Hip Prosthesis
If osteoarthritis is severe, a total hip prosthesis will be necessary including a cephalic prosthesis attached to the femur and a cup secured in the acetabulum.

At the Bordeaux-Merignac Sport Clinic, some hip prosthesis procedures are performed as an outpatient basis, while others require hospitalization for 1 to 3 days.
